Good afternoon, dear partners, friends, participants of the annual MIL global conference! We are happy to join to the Global MIL week. Today I want to share with you our progress, experience and the new direction of our media information literacy projects in Kyrgyzstan, Central Asia. How are we engaging school and university teachers to the MIL?
First, I want to start from our successes in the education system:
First and most important for us is the institutionalizing MIL in the education system of the Kyrgyz Republic. This year, by a resolution of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Kyrgyz Republic, the State Educational Standard of School General Education of the Kyrgyz Republic was approved. One of the new integrations is the introduction of MIL and ICT skills and abilities to the standard.
Secondly, we have a school subject "civic education". I think you are familiar with this subject, and most likely you also have a similar subject in the school system. This year, our 7th grade schoolchildren are already studying certain MIL topics within the framework of this subject.
Third, the State Institute for Advanced Training and Retraining of Teachers under the Ministry of Education and Science of the Kyrgyz Republic has integrated MIL into its program and our developed materials on MIL have been adapted. Together with the institute, we began to train teachers in MIL skills throughout the country.
We thank you for your interest and availability to speak and/or moderate at your respective feature sessions during the Global Media and Information Literacy Week 2022 Feature Conference , celebrated under the theme “Nurturing trust: A Media and Information Literacy Imperative” from 24-31 October in Abuja, Nigeria.
