Global Media and Information Literacy Week (MIL) is the most important annual event that discusses and summarizes the achieved results in increasing and promoting media literacy of everyone under the slogan “MIL for all”.

From 24th to 31st October 2020, the eighth global celebration of Global Media and Information Literacy Week will take place under the theme “Resisting Disinfodemic: Media and Information Literacy for everyone, and by everyone”. The topic is devoted to how to counteract disinformation, improve the ability of each person to receive information and use technology.

If you are interested in promoting media literacy, UNESCO invites everyone around the world to organize local online or offline MIL-related events. To do this, you need to register using the following link: https://en.unesco.org/global-mil-week-2020-celebrations-registration. These events will provide citizens with the opportunity to participate in media development and access to knowledge on how to be resistant to disinformation and increase the smart consumption of information.

2020 Media Monitoring in Central Asia: infodemia and more

IREX Europe, together with partners in Central Asian countries: Media Support Center Foundation (Kyrgyzstan), International Journalism Center MediaNet (Kazakhstan), Center for the Development of Contemporary Journalism (Uzbekistan) and the "Gurdofarid" Public Organization  (Tajikistan), are implementing the project "Building Resistance in Youth in Central Asia to the influence of illegal hate speech and misinformation online and on social media”(BRYCA project) with financial support from the European Union. The goal of the BRYCA project is to promote critical thinking and strengthen the resilience of young people in Central Asia to misinformation, as well as online hate speech.

As part of Global MIL Week 2020, we will present you the results of media monitoring of social pages and other online resources from January to September 2020. Monitoring reveals topical examples of hate speech, falsification and misinformation, which were especially acute during the pandemic. The purpose of the discussion is to tell about media monitoring as a process and share its results since the beginning of the pandemic, how the nature and subject matter of hate speech has changed over the year.

Time to play Qlever: how to debunk fake news and misinformation

The QLEVER game platform was developed within the framework of the project "Building Resistance in Youth in Central Asia to the influence of illegal hate speech and misinformation online and on social media" (BRYCA project) with financial support from the European Union.

The purpose of our game experiment is to help young people in Central Asia strengthen important skills and methods for identifying fake information and hate speech for their own resilience and safety. The level of media literacy in this region is not high. Society often lacks in-depth knowledge of the role and responsibility of media in a democratic society. As in the rest of the world, young people in Central Asia mainly rely on information from online resources and social pages. At the same time, traditional media resources do not constitute an alternative to hate speech and misinformation on the Internet. As a result, society is subject to manipulation.

The QLEVER game platform offers a potential solution to the problem through innovative and interactive games and motivating young people through prizes - from mobile units to smartphones. Thus, our goal is to increase the resistance to hate speech, propaganda and false information of thousands of young people from a vulnerable sector, especially in social pages.

During the event, our coordinators of the game platform will tell you how the platform was created and from where we take examples for games. Participants will demonstrate online how to play the games on our platform.
QLEVER is available for free download in the Google Play Market for Android mobile phones: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.irokez.qlever and online https://qlever.asia/ru/region.
